Liberty and Prosperity
New Jersey’s official state motto is “Liberty and Prosperity.” The state motto was officially adopted in 1777.
New Jersey was the third state to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1787 and the first state to sign the Bill of Rights. The motto appears on both the state’s seal and state flag.
Liberty was on the state politicians and leaders’ mind during 1777 when deciding on the the motto. Prosperity refers to being free from the taxes imposed by the British government and the future of being free from the tax burden.
