State Seal of Maryland

Maryland State Seal

The seal of Maryland has symbols on both of its faces, making it among some of the rarest seals in the US as well as the world. The seal has undergone many changes in the past. The first seal was used from 1605 to 1675. It was then modified in 1794, 1817, 1854, and on other occasions. The present-day seal was last modified in 1969.

The mounted knight on the obverse side represents ”Lord Baltimore” i.e. Cecil Calvert; his title is also mentioned on the same side. The reverse side features ”The Coat of Arms” of Maryland. The motto of Maryland was basically that of the ”Calvert Family” and means ”Manly Deeds, Womanly Words”.
