State Seal of North Dakota
The present-day Seal of the State of North Dakota was designed in 1987 by Lilli Stewart and is based on the territorial seal when North Dakota was still a Territory.
It features an open field with a tree that is surrounded by agricultural, historical, and native symbols such as wheat, anvil, a bow crossed with three arrows, and a mounted native pursuing a bison. The state motto, ” Liberty and Union now and forever” surrounds these symbols. October 1, 1889, refers to the adoption of North Dakota’s first constitution.
