South Carolina State Seal

Adopted in 1776, the Great Seal of South Carolina features two elliptical sections linked together by the branches of a palmetto tree (South Carolina state tree). The left ellipse shows a tall dominating palmetto tree and a fallen oak tree, the former representing the defenders of Fort Sullivan while the latter representing the British during the ”Battle of Fort Sullivan”. The ellipse features ”Spes” the Roman goddess, walking on a shore which is littered with weapons. The branch of laurel in her hands and the rising sun represents hope. The state motto “While I breathe, I hope” is written on the image.
