South Dakota State Seal

The Great Seal was designed in 1885 while South Dakota was still a Territory in 1885. The South Dakota state motto “Under God, the People Rule” graces the inner circle of the seal which also features a river, a boat, a farmer, cattle, and a mine; they represent commerce, industry, agriculture, and natural resources. 1889 denotes the year South Dakota became a state.
