Regnant Populus

Arkansas state motto

Regnant Populus is the state motto of Arkansas. It translates from Latin to English as “the people rule.” Like many other states, the motto is tied closely to the Great Seal of the state.

In the case of Arkansas, the seal bore the motto Regnant Populi when it entered statehood in 1836. On May 23, 1907, the Arkansas General Assembly updated Regnant Populi to Regnant Populus to fix the Latin. The origin of the motto, whether Latin or English, is unknown.
