The state motto of Delaware is “Liberty and Independence.” It was adopted when this phrase was added to the official Delaware seal in 1847. The motto was given from the Order of Cincinnati (a hereditary, military, and patriotic organization formed in May 1783 by officers who had served in the revolution) and approved in 1847.

Delaware is nicknamed ‘The First State’ as it was the first to ratify the United States Constitution on December 7, 1787. The state motto also appears on the state flag situated on a ribbon below the coat of arms.
