Indiana Motto

Crossroads of America

In 1937, Indiana decided its official state motto to be “Crossroads of America.” This initially was a nickname for Indianapolis, the state capital, where several major interstate highways criss-cross Indiana, connecting Hoosiers to the rest of the United States.

The Crossroads of America’ signifies the importance of waterways, railroads, highways and other transportation facilities in the state, viewed by many as some of the finest in the nation.
