Iowa State Motto

Iowa Motto

Our Liberties we Prize and Our Rights we Will Maintain

The state motto of Iowa is “Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain” and can be seen on the Iowa state flag.

It was suggested by a three-man Senate committee and possibly in response to the difficulties Iowa faced in establishing statehood. It was incorporated into the design of the Iowa state seal at the Senate committee’s suggestion. The motto clearly states that the liberties of the Iowa citizenry are valued and that they are willing to defend them. The motto was adopted in 1847.
