missouri state motto

Missouri’s state motto is Salus Populi Suprema Lex Esto which is Latin for “The welfare of the people shall be the supreme law”. The motto is displayed on Missouri’s state seal which was designed by Judge Robert William Wells and adopted by the Missouri General Assembly on January 11, 1822.

The seal also includes a shield encircled by the motto, “United we stand, divided we fall,” which is meant to show how the state benefits from being a member of the United States.
