The Empire State
NY is the Two-letter or Postal Abbreviation and N.Y. is the Traditional or Standard Abbreviation for the State of New York. It acquired its nickname “Empire State” to recognize its vast wealth and variety of resources. Some historians credit George Washington for naming New York the Empire State.
Many important landmarks and places have been named after the state’s nickname. The Empire State Building, one of the most famous buildings in the world was named after it. You can see it on New York license plates too.
