The Palmetto State
SC is the Two-letter or Postal Abbreviation and S.C. is the Traditional or Standard Abbreviation for the State of South Carolina. “Palmetto State” refers to the South Carolina official state tree, the Sabal Palmetto. The Palmetto is also featured on the official state flag and the state quarter.
The symbolism of the palmetto tree goes back to Revolutionary War times when was shown on flags back then. The thinking is that the troops built a fort out of the wood from the trees.
