Old Dominion State
Virginia’s nickname is “The Old Dominion State.” It refers to Virginia’s status as England’s oldest colony in the America. Charles II of England quartered the arms of Virginia on his shield in 1663, thus adding Virginia to his dominions of France, Ireland and Scotland.
