State Seal of Louisiana

State Seal of Louisiana

The Seal of Louisiana features the state bird, a brown Pelican tearing at its breast to feed its young. The seal also features the state motto “Union, Justice, Confidence.” It was originally designed by William C.C Claiborne, Governor of the ”Territory of Orleans” featuring an eagle; it was changed after Louisiana became a state. In 2006, the Louisiana legislature passed a bill making it obligatory to show three drops of blood on the pelican, an objection originally raised by an eighth-grader.
