Tennessee State Seal

The state seal of Tennessee is used by the secretary of state. The Roman numerals on the seal refer to the admission of Tennessee to the Union; it was the 16th State to do so. The Seal was first designed in 1801. Images such as the plow, cotton plant, and wheat represent the state’s agriculture. Commerce is represented by a boat. The seal is surrounded by the words ”The Great Seal of the State of Tennessee”. A standard version of the seal was adopted in 1987 and is held by the Secretary of State.
